Project Description
The Bishoftu International Airport will be Ethiopian Airlines’ new global hub and Africa’s largest airport. 

It will have space to berth 270 planes and will have an initial capacity of 60-million passengers a year, expanding to 110-million passengers at full capacity.

The project includes the design of the four-runway airport.

Capital Expenditure
$12.5-billion. The project was initially billed at $10-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
Work is expected to be concluded in 2029.

Latest Developments
Construction has officially started.

The State-owned airline was awarded the contract to design the four-runway airport.

The airline will fund 30% and lenders will finance the balance.

It has already allocated $610-million for earthworks, which are expected to be completed in one year, with the main contractors scheduled to start work in August 2026.
